Fall 2014 Tournament Rules and Details


The University of Waterloo Badminton Club (UWBC) is introducing a new tournament this term, which we are calling the UWBC Open.

A special feature of this tournament is that we will be using the experimental BWF 5x11 scoring system. For more information, please see below.

Dates & Times Saturday, October 25, 2014 from 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Sign-in Times* Sign-in for all events begins on Sat. Oct. 25th at 9:15 AM. The deadline for players to sign-in are bolded below. If you come after this deadline, you will be disqualified.

Men's Doubles: 9:15 AM - 9:45 AM
Ladies' Doubles: 9:15 AM - 10:45 AM
Mixed Doubles: 9:15 AM - 2:45 PM

Note: Parking is free if you park in lot X (refer to the map linked above)
Cost UWBC Members:
$15 for one event or $20 for two events. Members must bring their UWBC Fall 2014 membership card.

Non-Members (includes UW students, alumni, staff, and non-UW players):
$25 for one event or $30 for two events.

Non-members need to fill out a waiver form. Blank waiver forms will also be available at the tournament for participants to fill out.
Format* All events will consist of round robin (groups of 4 teams), followed by AB single elimination.

The top two teams from each group proceed to A flight. The bottom two teams from each group proceed to B flight.

All teams are guaranteed to play four games.
Scoring System* 5x11 Point Scoring

All rounds will follow this format (best three-out-of-five 11 point games, with no deuce)
Shuttles 2 Aeroplane Green Label G1130 Feathers per five game set will be provided. Participants must supply any additional feathers.

Additional shuttles can be purchased for $2 each.
Maximum Teams Please note that we will not be increasing the maximum number of teams after the tournament fills up.

Men's Doubles: 16 teams
Mixed Doubles: 16 teams
Ladies' Doubles: 8 teams
Medals and Prizes* All winners and finalists will receive medals and prizes.

All participants will be entered into the prize draw.
Your entry fee will include the following*:
  • Being a registered participant of specified event(s)
  • 1x sports drink bottle
  • Access to a variety of snacks such as granola bars and bananas
  • 1x Food ticket for Lunch
  • 1x entry to the prize draw
Note: Please take care of your food ticket, as we will not issue a new one if you lose it!
